Path to accounting:
- 11 percent of high school students want to be an accountant
- 52 percent of accountants are male, 48% are female
- 75 percent of accounting majors express an interest in math
- Projected job growth for accountants by 2018 is 22 percent
- Most CPA programs require 150 credit hours of college coursework, an additional 30 hours beyond the usual 4-hour bachelor’s degree
- Roughly 50 percent of accounting students pass the CPA test
- Only four states do not require the full 150 hours. They are Delaware, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Colorado
- There are 1.35 million accountants in the U.S.
- Accounting salaries are broken down with the top 10 percent earning an average of $104,450; the median accounting population earning $60,340, and the bottom 10 percent earning $37,690
